About the photo

Frontline March For Our Lives, Chicago

I shot this image at March For Our Lives Chicago, one of hundreds of nationwide events that were organized and led by remarkable young activists following the Parkland tragedy in 2018. This photograph presents an empowering, hopeful portrait of the promise and potential of our future. As the sole artist representing Chicago in this exhibition, I’m proud that our Chicago youth will be represented in the Smithsonian. The National Portrait Gallery’s mission is to tell the story of America by portraying the people who shape the nation’s history, development, and culture. They aim to feature people of remarkable character and achievement, and I think these student activists are a worthy addition to their collections.
